Public commission in Congleton Park

Congleton Partnership and Congleton Community Projects recently asked artists to submit proposals for a public art piece in commemoration of Margaret Williamson. Margaret was active at all levels of the community and her energy and inspiration was behind many voluntary groups and organisations in Congleton. Margaret’s love of nature and environmental sustainability was manifested through her work for the Cheshire Wildlife Trust, Congleton in Bloom and helping to organise several Environmental Festivals in the Park to name a few projects.
Her sudden passing in April 2015 left the community reeling and the need to celebrate her love of life, her energy and her commitment has found expression in this project.

I am delighted that my proposal was chosen by public vote. It is to create a unique globe-shaped metal bench with seats facing the four points of the compass. It would have a contemporary sculptural form providing contemplative views of the river and the park. The artwork will be laser-cut with patterns inspired by local tree and plant life, similar to my portfolio, to reflect Margaret’s deep love of the natural world. It would also incorporate inspirational literary quotes, again referencing nature. The sculpture is due to be completed in October 2016 and unveiled in November.
